This evolution signals the nascent stages of an "agentic economy," where AI entities are becoming active participants in digital commerce, driving demand for specialized online services and paving the way for new economic models.

The network’s recent observations highlight a dramatic expansion in the capabilities and applications of these AI agents. Base reports that agents are already leveraging the platform to pay for a diverse array of services essential for their operation and task completion. Browserbase enables paid cloud browser sessions, allowing agents to interact with the web in a controlled and automated manner. Exa provides extensive web search capabilities and content data extraction. Wolfram Alpha contributes its renowned computational knowledge engine, while established travel platforms like Tripadvisor, FlightAware, and Amadeus are being integrated to support complex travel-related workflows for AI agents. Cloudflare, a leading web infrastructure and security company, actively supports the x402 protocol and is a member of the x402 foundation, signaling its commitment to enabling this new wave of internet transactions. To facilitate this transition and further reduce friction within the agentic economy, Base emphasizes the continued need for foundational blockchain infrastructure. Key requirements include low-cost transactions, secure and user-friendly wallets, stablecoins for predictable value transfer, machine-readable pricing mechanisms, robust spend limit controls, transparent receipts, granular permission management, auditable transaction trails, verifiable identity solutions, reputation systems, and standardized protocols that agents can interact with directly and programmatically.
