The Ethereum Foundation is articulating a robust vision for the future of Decentralized Finance (DeFi), positioning it not merely as a speculative frontier but as the inevitable and essential evolution of the global financial system. This strategic direction underscores a core belief: financial autonomy should be a fundamental right, not a privilege reserved for a select few. This ethos is presented as a critical catalyst for Ethereum’s continued growth and widespread adoption. The foundation’s approach is characterized by a commitment to specific principles that will define its support and advocacy within the DeFi ecosystem.
At the heart of the Ethereum Foundation’s (EF) DeFi strategy lies an unwavering commitment to core tenets that differentiate truly decentralized finance from its traditional counterparts. These principles include being permissionless, censorship-resistant, privacy-first, self-custodial, and open source. The EF acknowledges the significant challenges inherent in achieving these ideals fully, but it has clearly defined its role as a proactive advocate. This involves championing these principles, providing robust support to development teams striving to implement them, spotlighting projects that embody these values, and offering clear guidance on the pathways and the profound importance of realizing this vision.
The foundation’s ambition extends beyond incremental improvements to existing financial structures. It advocates for "Defipunk," a paradigm shift that envisions finance fundamentally enabled and shaped by the unique capabilities of the Ethereum blockchain, transcending the limitations of traditional finance (TradFi). This signifies a departure from merely making existing financial services marginally better, and instead, fostering innovations that would be impossible without the underlying decentralized infrastructure of Ethereum.
The Evolving Landscape of Decentralized Finance: Present Capabilities and Future Frontiers
DeFi protocols are currently empowering individuals and institutions globally with unprecedented access to financial tools. These include accessible savings mechanisms, lending platforms, sophisticated risk management solutions, and wealth-building opportunities that remain out of reach for a significant portion of the world’s population. The proliferation of stablecoins, accessible yields without the need for private banking intermediaries, and perpetually open markets that cannot exclude participants are testaments to DeFi’s current impact. This movement is central to Ethereum’s broader objective of fostering financial sovereignty for all, particularly for those marginalized by or excluded from traditional financial systems, or those whose assets are vulnerable to arbitrary freezing. Currently, these tools benefit millions of individuals and thousands of institutional entities worldwide, and the Ethereum Foundation is committed to strengthening these existing frameworks.
However, the EF’s vision extends far beyond the current state of DeFi. It is equally dedicated to supporting the evolution of DeFi into its future iterations, which promise to explore radical concepts that challenge conventional financial paradigms. This forward-looking perspective is not about incremental upgrades (often referred to as "N+1" improvements) but about fostering genuinely transformative innovations. The genesis of borrowing directly from smart contracts, for instance, exemplifies the type of foundational innovation that emerged from early DeFi. The foundation is actively exploring possibilities such as leveraging user-controlled Artificial Intelligence (AI) in conjunction with high-throughput on-chain futures markets to devise fundamentally superior solutions for hedging against anticipated future expenses. Furthermore, it is investigating the creation of the world’s most effective futarchy Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) and exploring the integration of DeFi with its advancements in Zero-Knowledge (ZK) reputation systems to enable the first truly privacy-preserving undercollateralized lending protocols. The ultimate goal is to pave the way for entirely novel financial primitives yet to be conceived.
Both the current and future iterations of DeFi are instrumental in driving Ethereum’s progress. The Ethereum Foundation intends to support builders across this entire spectrum, facilitating the transition of innovative "DeFi of tomorrow" use cases into mature, live applications on the Ethereum mainnet, thereby becoming the "DeFi of today."
Key Personnel and Strategic Direction
The Ethereum Foundation has strategically positioned key individuals to spearhead its DeFi initiatives. Hsiao-Wei Wang, Co-Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation, articulated the organization’s stance: "Ethereum is poised to attract exponentially larger flows of capital, talent, and innovative energy. Growth, however, is often path-dependent: standards adopted in periods of chaotic rapid growth harden into legacy constraints, and designs that privilege transparency can lock in surveillance by default. Incumbent systems often exert subtle pressures that narrow the design space for novel DeFi primitives and constrain privacy-focused innovation. The Ethereum Foundation will defend against these pressures." This statement highlights the EF’s commitment to safeguarding the core principles of DeFi against the potential pitfalls of rapid growth and external pressures.
Within the App Relations team, Charles St. Louis and ivangbi are leading the EF’s DeFi efforts. Their combined experience, exceeding a decade in DeFi development, provides a strong foundation for these initiatives. Charles St. Louis brings a wealth of experience, having previously led DELV (formerly Element Finance), a pioneering fixed-rate yield protocol, from 2021 to 2025. His prior contributions include significant work on the DAI stablecoin system and shaping MakerDAO’s governance, with earlier involvement in the security token space dating back to 2018. Ivan, on the other hand, co-founded Gearbox Protocol in 2021, a modular lending infrastructure focused on leverage. His deep roots in the Ethereum DeFi community, tracing back to the summoning of LobsterDAO in 2018, through the DeFi Summer, and culminating in the successful launch of a technically resilient protocol, demonstrate his comprehensive understanding of the ecosystem’s dynamics.
ivangbi emphasized the delicate balance required as TradFi and institutional adoption on Ethereum accelerate: "As TradFi and institutional adoption on Ethereum accelerate, we must not forget the core principles that built DeFi in the first place. Pragmatism is necessary, but our mission is to scale cypherpunk values alongside market growth. We see ourselves as the essential glueing piece between these two worlds. We are ready to listen and adapt; you know where to find us!" This sentiment underscores the EF’s commitment to bridging the gap between emerging decentralized systems and established financial markets while preserving the foundational ethos of DeFi.
Strategic Focus Areas for Ecosystem Development
As the Ethereum Foundation looks towards the beginning of 2026, it has outlined a focused set of priorities to guide its DeFi initiatives. While acknowledging a broader landscape of potential areas to address, the EF emphasizes a deliberate approach, starting with a concentrated set of objectives and expanding incrementally based on learning and ecosystem feedback.
Builder Relationships: A primary focus is on fostering robust connections between DeFi teams and the Ethereum Foundation, as well as among the builders themselves. This involves establishing clear communication channels for sharing protocol upgrade news, identifying and relaying application-layer needs to core Ethereum developers, and providing direct support to teams actively building on the Ethereum network. This proactive engagement aims to create a more cohesive and collaborative development environment.
Security: Enhancing the security of the DeFi ecosystem is paramount. The EF plans to support initiatives that embed security by default within DeFi protocols. This includes a critical examination of potential points of failure, such as interfaces, oracles, upgrade mechanisms, administrative keys, and the prevalent use of discretionary multi-signature wallets, which many protocols still rely on as temporary solutions. The foundation recognizes that exploits not only harm individual protocols but also significantly impede the progress of the entire ecosystem. Therefore, it aims to bolster auditing practices, support runtime protection measures, and encourage architectural designs that progressively move towards greater trustlessness over time.
Decentralization and Openness: The EF strongly advocates for open-source, composable, and verifiable code as the fundamental baseline for DeFi development. Code that can be readily inspected, audited, and built upon is code that fosters trust. The foundation intends to encourage development teams to transition away from centralized control structures and embrace decentralized governance models, exploring innovative approaches beyond existing default frameworks. This emphasis on openness is viewed as a strategic strength rather than a vulnerability.
Privacy: In alignment with the EF’s broader commitment to privacy, as detailed in its Privacy commitment, efforts will be directed towards supporting the development of privacy-preserving DeFi applications. The philosophy here is not to create isolated private stablecoins but to integrate privacy as a foundational infrastructure layer. This will initially focus on enabling private transactions for all token types, subsequently extending to more complex use cases like trading and lending. The objective is to make privacy the default standard, rather than an optional feature.
Standards and Risk Clarity: The foundation aims to promote the establishment of consistent standards across various DeFi sectors, including vaults, tokenization, Real-World Assets (RWAs), and disclosure formats. This includes supporting the development of shared risk frameworks that the ecosystem can reliably adopt. Such frameworks will involve clear taxonomies, honest assessments of what constitutes "low-risk" DeFi—a concept explored by Vitalik Buterin in his essay, "Low-Risk DeFi"—and enhanced coordination with wallets, explorers, and other infrastructure providers to minimize friction for users and developers.
Research and Content: The EF plans to actively create and curate high-quality DeFi content. This initiative will encompass in-depth mechanism research, data analysis, support for DeFi-focused events, and the development of accessible educational materials designed to help individuals navigate the complexities of DeFi and understand its practical applications. The foundation anticipates sharing concrete outputs, including frameworks, research findings, and event summaries, throughout the year as this work progresses.
Emerging Trends and Future Outlook
The Ethereum Foundation is closely monitoring several key areas poised to shape the future of DeFi. These include the intersection of DeFi and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the increasing institutional adoption of DeFi, the evolving landscape of stablecoins and payments, and the emergence of new financial primitives that defy existing categorization. The foundation is actively preparing content and formulating strategies for meaningful support in these burgeoning fields, with further announcements expected in due course.
Engagement and Collaboration
The App Relations team will be actively participating in significant industry events to discuss these DeFi initiatives. They are scheduled to speak at the Digital Asset Summit from March 24th to 26th and at EthCC from March 30th to April 2nd. The EF encourages anyone building DeFi on Ethereum and attending these events to connect with their team.
